INFORMACION GENERAL DEL DEPARTAMENTO ARCHIPIELAGO

Localización: El Archipiélago de San Andrés está situado al noroeste de Colombia, sobre el mar de las Antillas Caribe Sur Occidental . Lo integran las Islas de Providencia y Santa Catalina; los Islotes Boli­var (East South East Cays), Alburquerque (South Southwest Cays), Cotton Haynes; los cayos Grunt, Jhony Rose (Acuario), Easy cay, Roncador, Serrana, Serranilla, Quitasueno, Brothers, Rocky, Crab,  y los bancos Alicia y Bajo Nuevo.   Localizacion de San Andres entre las Latitudes 12 29' a 12 36'N; y Logintudes 81 41' to 81 43' OESTE.

Reserva de Biosfera: Debido a su ecosistema, biodiversidad y sus hermosos paisajes, el Archipiélago fue nombrado en el 2.001 por la UNESCO, como reserva de biosfera “Sea Flower”.

Descubrimiento: Varios historiadores coinciden en afirmar que el Archipiélago fue descubierto por los españoles en 1.510  y 1512 y poblado en el año 1629 por puritanos ingleses y leñadores de Jamaica, y reconquistado en la segunda mitad del siglo XVII por españoles. Durante doscientos años se disputaron la posesión de su territorio españoles, ingleses, holandeses y franceses. También durante ese mismo peri­odo el pirata Henry Morgan eligió a San Andrés como base de sus aventuras desde ahí planeo y ataco a la Ciudad de Panamá y según la leyenda, como escondite ideal para su famoso tesoro.

Historia: Aunque tuvieron un desarrollo desigual, la historia para todas las islas del archipiélago es la misma. Descubierta por los españoles en 1,510., y colonizada por los ingleses en 1,629, pero padecieron treinta y seis anos de ocupación militar por los españoles. Tras un ataque se bajaba la bandera española para izar la inglesa, y después de la siguiente embestida se repetía la operación a la inversa. La rapiña termina en 1793 con la firma del Tratado de Versalles por el cual Inglaterra reconocía a España la soberanía sobre el Archipiélago. Se mantuvo, sin embargo, la relación comercial con Inglaterra. Ya para 1806 habitaban las Islas 1200 personas, incluyendo 800 esclavos negros. Hoy en día  la población de San Andrés se acerca a 90.000 habitantes.

Topografía: San Andrés está conformada por una pequeña serranía  longitudinal cubierta por bosques de cocoteros, con una elevación  de 55.00 metros que se extiende de Norte a Sur. La formación Coralina de San Andrés y en particular el collar de arrecifes que la bordean en su costado Este da a sumar una policromía de belleza incomparable.

El Área: El Archipiélago posee una extensión de 349.800 Kms. Cuadrados de mar. El territorio Departamental, en su conjunto  tiene una extensión aproximada de 44.00 Kms. Cuadrados.

Religión: Conviven en las Isla las religiones Bautista, católica, Adventista, Misión Cristiana, Testigos de Jehová y otras protestantes.

Educación: San Andrés es una de las regiones de Colombia que presenta un menor índice de analfabetismo. La educación pública es gratuita en los niveles de Primaria y Secundaria. Contamos con más de 40  colegios y centros de enseñanza que brindan educación a más de 13.400 alumnos.  Existe dos instituciones de carácter técnico profesional (INFOTEP Y SENA), en donde se dan diferentes programas y carreras, al igual que una Universidad Cristiana y la Sede Caribe de la Universidad Nacional.

Economía: Los factores dominantes son: El Turismo, El Comercio, Servicios y finanzas y en segundo plano tenemos la Agricultura y La Pesca.

Idioma: El idioma oficial es el Español, aunque su culturapredominante es la Anglo caribeña, presente en sus costumbres Religiosas, Musicales, su Arquitectura y en lengua inglesa y creole (ingles Caribeno)hablada por todos los nativos.

Clima: El Clima es estable todo el ano, oscilando entre los 27° C, pero corren brisas frescas por todo el año.

Gobierno: Con la nueva Constitución de 1991, la Intendencia es convertida en Departamento Archipiélago, con unas condiciones especiales consagradas en el Arti­culo 310. La Primera Autoridad  en el Departamento es el Gobernador (e) Francisco Herrera Leal en remplazo del "Ronald Housni Jaller", elegido por votación popular para un peri­odo de cuatro anos. Entre sus colaboradores inmediatos están los Secretarios del Interior, Hacienda, Infraestructura y OO.PP, Educación, Turismo, Agricultura y Pesca, Salud, Servicios Administrativos, Privada, Cultura, Deportes, Departamento Administrativo de Planeación, Oficina Asesora entre otras .http://www.sanandres.gov.co

Documentación: Para los extranjeros es requisito indispensable portar pasaporte, para los nacionales, cedula de ciudadanía, todo visitante nacional o extranjero debe adquirir la tarjeta de turismo que puede ser requerida por las autoridades de control y residencia durante su estadia en las Islas.  

Visitantes: San Andrés recibe aproximadamente 400.000 turistas al año de los cuales el 15% son extranjeros. Se presenta alta afluencia turística en los peri­odos de Semana Santa, mitad de año y para diciembre y enero.

Horario Bancario: Existen diferentes establecimientos bancarios que laboran en los siguientes horarios: 8:00 am., a 11:30 am., y de 2:00 pm., a 4:30 p.m. de lunes a jueves.Los viernes el horario es: de 8:00 AM., a  11.30 am., y de  2:00 p.m., a 4:30 p.m.Algunas Corporaciones de Ahorro y Vivienda tienen horarios adicionales hasta las 7:00 pm., en días ordinarios y sábados todo  el día. En la Isla contamos con varios cajeros automáticos las 24 horas del día.

Servicio de Salud: San Andrés cuenta con un Hospital Departamental “Amor de Patria” y una Clínica Villareal, ubicados en la vía a San Luis, Igualmente contamos con un centro médico de la Cruz Roja ubicada en el sector del Barrio Obrero.

Aerolíneas: Existen las siguientes aerolíneas: Avianca, Latam, Copa, Viva Colombia y  Satena, las cuales llegan y salen a diario de las principales ciudades del Interior del país, como son: Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla, Cartagena, Manizales, Pereira, etc. Con conexiones a las ciudades intermedias con aproximadamente 13 vuelos diarios nacionales, y vuelos Internacionales de Centro y Sur América ( Sur America, Panamá y Costa Rica). Para temporada alta los vuelos nacionales se duplican. Los vuelos internacionales son manejados por las aerolineas, LAtam, Copa Air,  y Avianca-Taca.  Desde San Andrés también se pueden hacer conexiones con la hermana Isla de Providencia con Satena  que hacen hasta 8 vuelos diarios, dependiendo de la demanda de pasajeros. Como también opera diario via marítima un Catamaran para transporte de pasajeros. Se requiere Urgente mejorar la conectividad con vuelos directos y regulares a Miami, Florida y a San Jose, Costa Rica. 

Facilidades Aeroportuarias: El Aeropuerto está localizado al Norte de San Andrés, muy cerca del sector comercial y la zona hotelera, lo que facilita el traslado desde  y hacia el Aeropuerto en un lapso de tiempo mínimo.

Hospedajes: Hay mas o menos  18.000 camas, distribuidas en 947 hoteles, Apartahoteles, Posadas nativas, Posadas Turísticas, Hostales,  suites, cabañas, localizadas en su gran mayoría en la Zona de North End o Centro. Para los que quieren tranquilidad y seguridad hay algunos establecimientos muy importantes  localizados por la vi­a  a San Luis, Punta Sur en la Loma y en la Bahia del Cove.  

Horario De Compras:  Almacenes y Centros Comerciales abren sus puertas a partir de las 9.00 am., a 12:30 pm., y de  3.00 p.m. a 7:30 p.m algunos prestan el servicio de horario extendido. También sobre la Avenida Colombia (La Playa) encontrara establecimientos comerciales de artículos de primera necesidad que se encuentran abiertos las 24 horas del día.

Autoridades: Se dispone de un Departamento de Policía, Defensa Civil, Apostadero Naval, Fuerza Área, Batallón de Infantería. Las entidades de vigilancia y control como la Procuraduría, Contraloría, Tribunales Superiores, Juzgados, Fiscalía, y las principales instituciones descentralizadas del orden nacional.

Consulados: En San Andrés actualmente hay cuatro Consulados que son: El de Costa Rica, Chile, Guatemala y Panama y Brasil.

Location : The Archipelago of San Andrés is located northwest of Colombia , on the S.W. Caribbean Sea . It is composed of the islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina , the Islets Bolivar (East South East Cays ) , Albuquerque ( South Southwest Cays ) , Cotton Haynes Grunt cays , Johnny Rose (Aquarius ) , Easy cay , snorers , Serrana , Serrania Quitasueño , Brothers , Rocky , Crab , and banks Alicia and Bajo Nuevo . Biosphere Reserve : Due to its ecosystem , biodiversity and beautiful landscapes, the Archipelago was appointed in 2001 by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve " Sea Flower " .

Language: The official language is Spanish , although the Anglo Caribbean culturapredominante is present in Religious customs , Musical , its architecture and in English and Creole ( Caribeno English ) spoken by all the natives.

Climate: The climate is stable throughout the year , ranging between 27 ° C, but cool breezes throughout the year.

Government : With the new Constitution of 1991 , the Administration is converted in the Archipelago , with special characteristics defined in Article 310. Documentation: For foreigners it is required to carry a passport, for national citizen identification , all national and foreign visitors must purchase a tourist card that could be requiere by local autorities of control of Residence OCCRE during your visit 

Visitors : San Andrés receives approximately 400,000 tourists per year of which 15 % are foreigners. We present high tourist inflow during periods of Easter, mid-year and for December and January.
